Is Your Child Ready for Kindergarten? A Christian School Checklist

What Kindergarten Readiness Really Means

✅ Academic & Cognitive Readiness

These are the skills most parents think of first — and for good reason. By the time a child enters kindergarten, it's helpful if they can:

• Recognize and name most letters of the alphabet

• Identify numbers 1–10 and begin simple counting

• Sort objects by color, shape, or size

• Follow two- to three-step instructions

• Stay focused on a single activity for 5–10 minutes

• Show curiosity and ask "why" questions

Don't panic if your child isn't checking every box. Kindergarten teachers are trained to meet students where they are. What matters most is that a child is curious, engaged, and willing to try.

• Recognizes their own name in print

• Shows interest in books and being read to

• Attempts to write their name (even if imperfectly)

✅ Social & Emotional Readiness

This is where many children — especially those who haven't been in a structured preschool setting — face the biggest challenges. Kindergarten requires a child to:

• Separate from parents or caregivers without significant distress

• Take turns and share materials with other children

• Express basic emotions using words ("I'm frustrated," "I feel left out")

• Follow classroom routines and transitions

• Resolve small conflicts without immediate adult intervention

• Show empathy toward classmates

Social-emotional readiness is not about having a "perfect" child. It's about having a child who has been given enough safe practice navigating relationships and emotions. What If My Child Isn't Quite Ready?

Here's what you can do right now:

• Read together daily. Even 15–20 minutes of shared reading builds vocabulary, comprehension, and a love of learning.

• Practice independence. Let your child dress themselves, pour their own cereal, and manage small tasks. These build confidence.

• Create consistent routines. Predictable mornings and bedtimes help children feel safe and ready to learn.

• Enroll in a quality Pre-K program. Structured, faith-filled preschool is the single most effective way to close readiness gaps before Kindergarten begins.

When to Consider Waiting a Year

Sometimes called a "kindergarten redshirt" year, holding a child back — particularly one born late in the year (October–December in Arkansas) — is worth discussing with your preschool teacher and pediatrician. Signs that a child may benefit from another year in Pre-K include:

• Significant separation anxiety that hasn't improved

• Difficulty following multi-step directions

• Limited ability to engage in peer play

• Fine motor skills well behind peers of the same age

This is not a failure. It's wisdom. An extra year of intentional Pre-K preparation can make an enormous difference in a child's confidence and long-term academic trajectory.
